When it comes to target mounts for steel targets there are several choices. This article deals solely with mounting your steel targets on either a t-post or 2×4. Both types have pros and cons.
The 2×4 mount is easier to move from place to place, as you just relocate your 2×4 stand. We also think the 2×4 mount is better if you shoot handguns. Due to the proximity of the steel target for handgun use, and the fact that handgun bullets hold together more than high velocity rifle bullets, we feel 2×4 mounts are safer. A bullet could ricochet off of a metal t-post and strike someone. A wood 2×4 is softer, and the fragment would just lodge in the wood.
The t-post mount also has its pros. The set up with a t-post mount is cheaper than with a 2×4 mount, as you don’t need any stand. The t-post just drives into the ground. The t-post is also great for uneven terrain, as the base of your 2×4 stand can be crooked or wobbly if the ground isn’t fairly even.
At siTargets we offer both 2×4 mounts and t-post mounts for a variety Ar500 silhouette and gong targets. A couple of our newest mounts are our angled target mounts, available in both 2×4: https://sitargets.com/product/2×4-angled-target-hanger-for-ar500-targets-great-way-to-mount-gongs/ and t-post: https://sitargets.com/product/t-post-angled-target-hanger-for-ar500-targets-great-way-to-mount-gongs-copy/.
